Glossary
This ever-growing glossary defines content marketing and SEO terms. Suggest new terms or corrections. If you can keep things humorous, the better. Add a link to your website or relevant resource.
A
- Awesome – This is who you are.
- Alt tag – Text added to images to tell search engines and screen readers what the image is about. Known as alternative text, it is vital for accessibility and SEO.
- Ahrefs – One of the best SEO tools in the market. Now if only they could sanitize their data.
B
- Badass – Something you are because you go after what you want. Zero excuses. Master of your fate, Captain of your soul vibes. E.g., you’re a badass business owner who deserves all the good things life offers.
- Blog – A website with regularly updated content, i.e., articles or posts. The VistaWriting Blog is a good example. Your blog, too, should be an example with my Midas touch.
- Black hat SEO – Shady SEO techniques meant to game search engine rankings. These techniques go against Google’s ranking policies and will land you in hot soup.
C
- Content marketing – Using inbound techniques such as website content, blog writing, eBooks, email marketing, social media, et cetera to educate, engage, and stimulate interest in your offer.
- Commonsense – Human “seventh” sense that isn’t common at all. Not to be confused with intuition or gut feeling.
- Conversion – The desired action you want web visitors to take on your website. For example, hire you, sign up for a free trial, join a newsletter, contact you, watch a video, comment, download a file, buy something, etc.
- Click-through rate (CTR) – The percentage of people who click on your link after seeing it. If 100 people saw your link (impressions) and five clicked, your click-through rate is 5%. Formula: (Clicks ÷ impressions) X 100 = CTR.
D
- DIY – Do it yourself. E.g., the blog is laden with DIY SEO and content marketing tips.
- DFY – Done for you, like the writing services Freddy offers you.
- Domain name – Also known simply as domain, it is the internet address of your website. For example, vistawriting.com is the domain name for this website. It’s how people find your website on the World Wide Web (WWW).

- Elementor – One of the best WordPress page builders.
- Ego – Perhaps the thing keeping you from hiring an experienced freelance writer? No? Also what led to the demise of Vecna. Oh no, spoiler alert. My bad.

- Freddy – The best freelance writer ever. See the love from clients ♥
- Fresh – How your SEO content feels after Freddy’s touch.

- God – Above all else.
- Grok – Chat-based AI content tool much like (but possibly better than?) ChatGPT.
H
- Hogwash – Poorly-written content that doesn’t rank in Google or make you money.
- High-quality – The kind of content you receive when you hire Freddy as your freelance writer.
I
- Interlinking – Linking to other relevant pieces of content on your blog or website to boost discovery and SEO. Also known as internal linking.
- Infographic – An image with detailed information about a topic, e.g., SEO techniques, content marketing trends, latest blogging statistics, etc.
J
- Joshing – Teasing jokingly. E.g., Eunice likes joshing when sloshed.
- Jane Doe – Unknown person. Also known as John Doe. Or is it Them Doe nowadays? 😀 E.g., are you reaching your target audience, or talking to Jane and John Doe?
K
- Karen – We all know one. In blogging, it’s the one sore person who doesn’t respect others’ opinions, especially in the comments. Also known as a troll. Don’t be a Karen.
- KD – Keyword density. How often keywords appear in your content for optimal ranking. Expressed as a percentage. The sweet spot is 2.5%, which is about 12 times for every 500 words. Say whaaat? I know. This is why you need a professional SEO writer. Also, plugins like Yoast SEO come in handy.
- King – What great content is. Can we also add Queen, because – chess?
L
- LLM – Large language model. Just think of it as the engine that runs AI content tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, etc.
- Longtail SEO keywords – Long (three-to-four-word) search terms that are easy to rank in Google. They are also more specific, hence highly relevant to search intent.
M
- Muriuki – Freddy’s second name. Best writer ever. Never once did I imagine I would refer to myself in third-person but here we are. Let’s tango 🙂
- Measurable results – Content results that you can see in your website analytics reports and bank statement.
- Mijugla – Marketese or salesy content full of hyperbole. This type of content doesn’t work for content marketing, because you aren’t supposed to “sell.”
N
- NDA – Non disclosure agreement. A legal document to protect your privacy. I protect your privacy around here. You can read more in the privacy policy.
- Ninja – An operator excellent at what they do. Freddy is a literary ninja.
O
- Organic traffic – Website visitors I drive to your website using proven content marketing and SEO techniques.
- Old – Your existing website content that clearly needs a new lease on life.
P
- Pandora – A mysterious fictional world in Avatar. Could also mean an infamous box you never want to open.
- Powerful words – Well-researched and written content with real, measurable results.
- Piñata – A hanging bag stuffed with candy that’s hard to hit because you’re blindfolded. Much like writing an eBook.
- POV– Point of view. Readers love objective POV content that helps them get things done. For example, POV videos are a popular trend on Instagram and TikTok.
Q
- Quality content – You need lots of valuable blog posts and website content to rank first and drive organic traffic from Google. While volume matters, never ever sacrifice content quality.
- Quack – SEO “experts” who will leave your coffers dry with nothing to show for it. The previous writer you fired.
R
- ROI– Return on investment. If you paid $1,500 for an article that generates $50,000 over its lifetime, your ROI is $48,500, or 3,233.33%.
- Ranking – Placing your content higher in SERPs. Appearing on the first page of Google. E.g., your content marketing post is ranking first for the primary keyword. Note that your ranking is based on many factors.

- SEO – Search engine optimization. The process of making your website easy to discover in search engines like Google and Bing. The goal is to appear on the first page for your primary keywords
- SERPs – Search engine result pages. The page you see when you search in Google.
- Sisu – Relentless, white-knuckled determination only found when all hope is lost. Also, Sisu, one of the best films on unbridled determination.
- Sloshed – What happens after downing several doubles of your favorite drink.
- SME – Subject matter expert. Exactly as it sounds, an SME is someone well-versed in a specific area. If you know so much about something, you can make money with an eBook.
T
- Target audience – The person you want to reach with your blog or website content. Remember you can’t create content for the entire universe. You must identify your ideal customer – the person most interested in your offer. And this isn’t anybody or everybody.
- Toil – The pointless work you do instead of hiring a professional freelance writer.

- User experience (UX) – Everything you do (including creating amazing content) to ensure visitors have a wonderful time on your website.
- Uranus – There is a joke in here somewhere I think but you cannot find great website content in Uranus. Hire Freddy instead.
